Roth's first solo book, “Burning Heart, A Portrait of the Philippines”, was published by Rizzoli in 1999, and represents ten years of photography in the archipelago, including one year of residence there. Arriving for the first time on assignment for The Los Angeles Times in 1987, Roth began her extended photo essay on the country as it recovered its social and political equilibrium in the decade following the end of Ferdinand Marcos' dictatorship. Subjects include a coup attempt, street kids, cock fights and daily street scenes. Text by Jessica Hagedorn
