In 1991, after the fall of communism in the U.S.S.R., and after The Ukraine was restored as a separate country, their first post communist referendum vote was held. For three weeks in the fall of that year, Roth and reporter Denise Hamilton criss-crossed The Ukraine for a story about the referendum vote for The Los Angeles Times Magazine.
